SHOP APEX LARGE

If you're looking for a serious gym backpack, the market has moved well beyond one large compartment and a pair of shoulder straps. The best bags now combine dedicated training storage, durable materials, laptop carry, footwear separation and enough organisation to stop your gear becoming one giant pile.

We compared the KNKG APEX Large with three of its closest competitors: WOLFpak 45L, Built For Athletes Pro Series 45L and Gymreapers Vanguard 22L.

Below, we're breaking down where each backpack is strongest — including the areas where another brand genuinely has the advantage.

THE QUICK ANSWER

WHICH GYM BACKPACK
IS BEST FOR YOU?

TACTICAL CLASSIC

WOLFPAK 45L

Best for traditional tactical carry

WOLFpak combines 45L capacity with its established 180-degree clamshell layout, multiple compartments, MOLLE styling, dual cup holders and a traditional tactical backpack format.

STRONG CHALLENGER

BFA PRO SERIES

Best for wet-gear management

The 45L Built For Athletes Pro Series is a strong all-rounder with a ventilated shoe compartment, antimicrobial lining, 17-inch laptop storage and an included waterproof wet bag.

COMPACT OPTION

GYMREAPERS VANGUARD

Best for gym-to-work carry

At 22L, the Vanguard is substantially smaller than the 45L-class bags here. Its strength is structured internal organisation, an 18.5-inch laptop compartment and a slim gym-to-work format.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

THE FULL COMPARISON

We're comparing the APEX Large because its expanded 45L capacity puts it directly into the same high-capacity category as the WOLFpak 45L and BFA Pro Series 45L. The Gymreapers Vanguard is a smaller 22L backpack, so its inclusion is more useful for comparing design philosophy and organisation than like-for-like capacity.

01 / CAPACITY

HOW MUCH GEAR
DO YOU ACTUALLY CARRY?

Capacity is where these four backpacks start to separate.

The APEX Large begins at 40L and expands to 45L , giving you the option to run it slightly slimmer when you don't need every litre and open up additional storage when your training day demands more.

WOLFpak and BFA both sit at a fixed 45L, making them similarly suited to athletes carrying larger amounts of equipment.

The Gymreapers Vanguard is intentionally different. At 22L, it's roughly half the capacity of these larger backpacks and makes more sense for athletes prioritising a streamlined gym-to-work bag over maximum equipment capacity.

02 / CONSTRUCTION

MATERIALS &
HARDWARE

Gym bags live a hard life. They're dropped on concrete, dragged through locker rooms and packed with heavy equipment, so construction matters.

Compared with lower-cost polyester, nylon offers superior abrasion resistance, tensile strength and long-term durability.

KNKG APEX

APEX uses 1680D ballistic nylon, heavy-duty YKK Vislon zippers and custom powder-coated steel hardware. Of the four backpacks compared here, it carries the highest listed denier rating.

WOLFPAK 45L

WOLFpak's 45L uses 900D Oxford polyester with a water-resistant surface and YKK two-way zippers.

BFA PRO SERIES

Built For Athletes uses a 1200D polyester outer with its Pro Series construction, along with water-resistant compartments.

GYMREAPERS VANGUARD

Vanguard uses 900D ballistic nylon or equivalent performance-grade polyester, a PU water-resistant coating and YKK coil and Vislon zippers.

03 / BUILT FOR TRAINING

WHERE DOES YOUR
GYM GEAR ACTUALLY GO?

SHOES

APEX and BFA both include dedicated ventilated shoe storage. APEX goes one step further by stating exactly what it is designed to accommodate: shoes up to size 15.

The current standard WOLFpak 45L and Vanguard specifications do not list a dedicated shoe compartment.

LIFTING BELT

One of APEX's most gym-specific differences is its external compression system. The straps are specifically designed to secure bulky equipment such as a lifting belt to the outside of the bag.

The other models offer attachment and storage options, but do not list a comparable dedicated external lifting-belt carry system.

WET GEAR

This is one category where BFA takes the win. The Pro Series includes a separate waterproof wet bag, useful for damp training clothes after a session.

APEX does not currently include a dedicated waterproof wet bag.

BOTTLES

APEX, WOLFpak and BFA all provide dual external bottle storage. Vanguard uses a single external side stash pocket designed to fit up to a 20oz shaker.

04 / ORGANISATION

FOUR DIFFERENT
WAYS TO PACK.

These backpacks approach organisation very differently.

APEX Large combines quick top access with an additional flat-lay compartment, oversized 3D exterior pockets and expandable storage zones. The aim is to give large pieces of gym equipment dedicated places without turning the main compartment into chaos.

WOLFpak uses its familiar tactical clamshell layout with fixed compartments and MOLLE-style organisation.

BFA also uses a traditional 180-degree clamshell approach, making it easy to lay the entire bag open and pack it more like luggage.

Gymreapers goes heavily into internal structure. Its Gridscape system, internal dividers and mesh pockets make sense for someone who values precise organisation but doesn't need 40–45 litres of space.

05 / BEYOND THE GYM

LAPTOP, WORK
& TRAVEL.

KNKG APEX 16"

Laptop storage + luggage pass-through

WOLFPAK 45L 17"

Laptop carry + trolley sleeve

BFA PRO SERIES 17"

Shock-absorbent laptop sleeve

GYMREAPERS 18.5"

Largest stated laptop capacity

If laptop size is your priority, Gymreapers wins this category with an unusually large 18.5-inch padded laptop compartment.

APEX supports laptops up to 16 inches and adds a luggage pass-through, making it well suited to gym-to-work use and travel. WOLFpak supports laptops up to 17 inches and includes a trolley sleeve, while BFA also supports devices up to 17 inches.

06 / CUSTOMISATION

MAKE IT YOURS.

APEX includes four oversized hook-and-loop panels, giving you extensive space for patches across the backpack.

WOLFpak and BFA also support hook-and-loop patch customisation, while Vanguard leans more heavily on its MOLLE attachment system.

07 / WARRANTY

BUILT TO LAST.

KNKG backs APEX with a 25-year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship.

WOLFpak offers a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, while BFA's Pro Series carries a two-year warranty when registered.

WHERE EACH BACKPACK
HAS THE EDGE

01

KNKG APEX

Best for high-capacity gym organisation. Expandable capacity, heavy-duty construction, dedicated size-15 shoe storage, oversized 3D pockets and an external lifting-belt carry system make it the most training-specific setup of the four.

02

WOLFPAK 45L

Best for the traditional tactical backpack format. WOLFpak brings 45L capacity, full 180-degree access, dual bottle holders, MOLLE-style functionality and its established tactical design language.

03

BFA PRO SERIES

Best wet-gear setup. BFA combines 45L capacity with a ventilated shoe compartment, antimicrobial lining and the only included waterproof wet bag in this comparison.

04

GYMREAPERS VANGUARD

Best compact work/gym crossover. At 22L it isn't trying to compete on maximum capacity. Its structured organisation and large laptop sleeve favour athletes carrying less gear.

THE VERDICT

WHICH ONE
SHOULD YOU BUY?

There isn't one backpack that wins every single specification. The right choice depends on what you actually carry.

Choose KNKG APEX if the gym comes first. Its expandable 40–45L capacity, 1680D ballistic nylon construction, dedicated ventilated shoe compartment, external lifting-belt carry, oversized 3D storage and extensive patch customisation make it our pick for athletes carrying a serious training setup.

Choose WOLFpak if you love the traditional tactical backpack format, full clamshell access, MOLLE-style organisation and the established WOLFpak aesthetic.

Choose Built For Athletes if the included wet bag, ventilated shoe compartment and 45L fixed capacity are the features that matter most.

Choose Gymreapers Vanguard if you want a much smaller 22L backpack with highly structured organisation and exceptional laptop capacity.
